AWA Sail Number cull – 2010
July 24, 2010For the 2010-11 season and beyond, non-AUS sail numbers will not be listed in the sail number register, or the Membership List. When a sailor without an AUS number renews their membership they will be issued with a new AUS number.
The standard Cull Rules still apply – if a sailor is unfinancial for 2 consecutive years, their registered sail number may be reallocated.
AWA Sec/Treasurer – John Rohde

Hi John,
I strongly disagree with the decision not to recognise non AUS sail numbers from the coming season. I have been a long standing member of Windsurfing Tas, AUSA, (now AWA) ever since they were first created. I have actively promoted and supported the sport of windsurfing through teaching, competing, and holding various committee positions within WT over a long period of time.
I no longer have any desire to compete nationally however I am still a keen competitor in all Windsurfing Tas events. There is no way I am going to bother peeling off sail numbers on 6 different sails to replace them with six digit AUS numbers. Absolutely no point and I consider it insulting to think my long standing number will no longer be included in the membership list.
Surely the major focus of AWA must be to both promote new membership and maintain existing membership. I agree if the sailor is participating in national and international competitions then yes an AUS number is necessary. But for the average sailor wanting to join in on a fun local event then no. Provided the sail number is unique to that sailor then does it really matter?
Hey Stewart. The administration of the sail registry is one of the major rolls the AWA preforms and the sensitivity of historic numbers has been discussed at length before the decision to conform to the international “AUS” was implemented circa 2006.
Every member of a state association receives a “AUS” number automatically now, and we have tried extremely hard to make sure that the number is as close as possible to an historic number e.g AUS-303 is available for you. The “AUS” is not required to be on the sail, for the reasons you mentioned (too long for most club competitors).
I know this is not ideal for some, but it is all part of being able to manage something that is a lot more difficult than most people realise.
Regards. Brett.
I completely understand the need for race competitors to be required to use the AUS numbers as per Int rules and regulations, however I can’t understand why non racing people with existing numbers can’t be still recognized on the website. I compete Nationally and locally in Waves, and I have competed under my KA numbers since I was in juniors.. and will continue to do so, it would just be nice to know our numbers were officially recognized and protected.
