Bass Strait Challenge

April 4, 2009

Allison Shreeve has completed windsurfing 125km of the Bass Strait Challenge in formidable conditions with 30-35 knot winds and 3-4m swells. In doing so she has exceeded CoastCare’s “Life on the Edge” campaign target for people from all walks of life to travel 100km of Australia’s coastline using non-motorised activity.

Allison departed from Stanley in Tasmania at 7.52am expecting 20kt winds from the NW, swinging 25-30kts for a few hours then moderating to 20kts SW in the afternoon with a 1-2m swell. In reality Allison was faced with 20-25kts from the NW then 25-35kts W/SW for six hours straight with swells peaking over 4m at times.

After the first four hours Allison was nearly half way across Bass Strait and on target to smash the current record. The middle third of the crossing proved to be the greatest challenge and after a courageous nine hour slog resulting in severe cramping and the onset of hypothermia, Allison’s challenge was ultimately brought to an end when she was helped on board Calypso II, her support boat, before she was able to set foot on Victorian shores.

A real highlight of Allison’s Bass Strait crossing was being escorted by about 50 dolphins showing off by surfing through the face of the waves and diving under her board. During a break, her companion was a beautiful Albatross out in the middle of nowhere, and a couple of friendly seals made an appearance. “This whole experience is one I’ll never forget”.

Results KASail WinterSeries’08 #1

July 6, 2008

[05/07/2008] The first round of the KASailWINTERSERIES was held today at Boggy Lake. The forecast was very light and a few braved the cold conditions (5 deg when I got there this morning) to rig their biggest sails, boards and fins and slug it out for a figure eight one hour marathon. The fleet consisted of big slalom boards, sails around 7.5m / 9.0m and also Richard Upton on his Exocet Kona, looking very threatening in the light winds. Steve Roberts was on hand with his boat again, and after surviving a high speed blow-out whilst cornering on the way there, he eventually arrived and set the course for us with our shiny new inflatable buoys courtesy of Windsurfing SA.

The wind was slightly stronger for the first half of the event (around 15 knots max) and most of us were planing around the course. Sam Doecke took an early lead and managed to lap the entire fleet and myself (I was in second at that stage) and continued planing the whole time. The wind dropped a little towards the end and some of us could no longer get planing, but Nick Bellgrove came to the fore with his 9.0m and ended up battling it out with Sam for the lead.

In the end, the results for round one are:
1st – Sam Doecke 16 laps
2nd – Nick Bellgrove 16 laps
3rd – Chris Dimond 13 laps
4th – Joe Belluzzo 12 laps
5th – Richard Upton 10 laps
6th – Tim Hemer 8 laps
7th – Geoff Shuttleworth 7 laps
= 8th – David Lane 2 laps (retired)
= 8th – Milo Milutinovic 2 laps (retired)

Well done to Sam Doecke (can’t believe he got a 36 knot peak too!!)

Thanks to all for participating.

Next weekend is round two. We will hold either Slalom or GPS Speed depending on the forecast. Hope to see you all there – Chris Dimond Aus06

Speed SA Style

April 1, 2008

We have excellent venues for GPS speed events, with sailors recording speeds up to 42 knots. The possible purchase of buoys (mentioned earlier)  is for the slalom and marathon racing, not just GPS speed, especially as GPS speed doesn’t actually need buoys.

Speed equipment: Any GPS can be used but it must be capable of showing speed in knots. The highest screen readout wins the day. No downloads required.

The Navi GT-11 is the best GPS unit to use at the moment as it has Doppler capabilities (around $150). Our events to date have been serious and competitive on the water, but decided on screen readout to allow for a variety of units to be used. This does not exclude anyone and maximizes entrant numbers. There’s stacks of forums that cover GPS use – seabreeze.com for example.

Due to the good participation levels, Chris Dimond will be running a Winter Series this year. For further information, make sure you are on his e-mail list
