Sean O’Brien joins Starboard

February 16, 2011

Press Release: Formula and Slalom specialist from down under, Sean O’Brien (AUS-120), will further add to the talent of the Starboard Dream Team on the racecourse in 2011. With a great start of the season, he’s already become the Oceanic and Australian champion for the 5th time at the 2011 Formula Downunder Pro.

The 27 year old from Australia will join Starboard’s elite racing team on the PWA and Formula World Tours in 2011. With his first PWA season in 2010 under his belt, rising star Sean has been able to make some waves on the windsurfing circuit with his skills in video editing and all things digital, with many riders out their recognizing his work behind the lens on some of the popular windsurfing movies doing the rounds online last summer.

Signing Sean was the next step to further increase the media content and videos put out on the web showcasing the Starboard products as well as reinforcing the already strong team Starboard has on the PWA and Formula racing circuits.

Sean O’Brien:
“I got my first big break as a 13 year-old kid riding Starboard boards in Australia and working at a shop that sold Starboard whilst I was still at school. I rode Starboard boards for many years until a few years ago, my work and travel took me to different areas out of Starboard’s scope, however I always had a feeling I would one day end up back under the Tiki flag as the brand had given me such a great platform to develop when I was a youngster; and so many years later can offer me such a great platform again to achieve my goals in the sport I love.

In those couple of years riding different brands I found I kept posting on the Starboard forums and answering people’s questions about the Starboard boards; I guess I always felt an affiliation with the brand and how good their products were. In late 2010 I jumped on one of the new iSonics whilst racing in Brasil and I thought to myself that I really needed to be on these boards in 2011. It’s been a while since I’ve been that impressed with any piece of equipment on the first ride.

One of my passion’s outside of windsurfing is shooting film and videos for web, and I’m excited to have a great channel through the Starboard brand to showcase some of my editing skills, so expect to see a lot of cool new videos alongside the great ones Starboard already shoots as well as me blasting down your local sandbank fully maxed on an iSonic or HWR!”

Lessons – SA

January 30, 2011

Windsurfing SA doesn’t run a school, but we do have the occasional event for beginners (We had a Women’s and Beginners Day on  21 Nov at Goolwa). Matt Stringer runs lessons, and you can get in touch with him through the Onboard shop:

http://www.onboard.com.au/sailboardingtipsandinfotips/

or
WINDSUP Windsurfing and SUP school – Call Matt Stringer on 0417858641, he will help you out.

Also, news about local events is usually posted on this forum:

http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/South-Australia/

“I went though Matt Stringer’s school (WindSUP) a few years ago. The idea is to fast track the beginner phase without the hassle of buying beginner equipment (and this is the phase where people either take it up or decide it’s not for them). After a few lessons, you’ll be able to look at buying intermediate gear and sailing on a lake or in the ocean by yourself. So, give Matt Stringer (WindSUP) a ring on 0417 858641 and book your first lesson. He teaches at Tiranna Way in West Lakes. The only thing Matt would like you to bring for your first lesson is foot protection (some old runners will do). This is in the event you tread on something sharp in the water. Good luck” – sharkbiscuit on seabreeze forum 28/1/2011

Play Safe at the River Murray

April 1, 2010

Easter is a fantastic time to visit the River Murray. If you are visiting the River Murray between Lock 1 (at Blanchetown) and Wellington, please be vigilant for the potential signs of riverbank collapse.

Riverbank collapses are dangerous and can happen quickly, so be vigilant to the signs of potential collapse, including:
• Cracking on the riverbank
• Leaning trees
• Bubbles in the water near the riverbank

Locations that have already been identified as high risk have been sign-posted and in some areas fenced off from public access. But other, unfenced areas may also be at risk, so be alert for the signs of potential collapse.

We want you, your friends, family and visitors to the region to continue to enjoy the river and all it has to offer, while being mindful of how to stay safe.

Call the free-call 24-hour Riverbank Collapse Hotline (1800 751 970) to report new cracking, or for further information. There is also information online at
