AUS2001 at IFCA Worlds

The wind conditions were far from great, which is unusual on Curacao this time of year. Still, the race directors and competitors managed to sail one elimination round so official World Champions could be crowned. During the week, thousands of spectators came to the Surf Town and even more followed the event online.

During 5 possible days of racing, it was only possible to race one late afternoon. During the final day the windpredictions were great, but in reality the wind didn’t show up. On Day 4 all the classes, except one (the Masters), completed an elimination round. The final heat of the Masters could not be sailed on the final day. The competitors did go to the starting line for a last chance, but no luck. This meant that by official IFCA rules there are six World Champions in the Masters class.

Jean Patrick van der Wolde (under 17) and Delano Moreno (under 13) from Curacao ensured local success by becoming the first IFCA Slalom World Champions for Curacao in history. “I am very proud. I don’t feel special but I did win”, Jean Patrick comments. “The means a step up. Now I have to prepare for the Youth class next year, which is much harder.”

Overall, the organization looks back on a great event. The goal is to promote local windsurfing and to put the spotlight on Curacao as a perfect choice for future international windsurfing events. Bruno de Wannemaeker, President of the IFCA recaps: “Event-wise it was fantastic: great organization, great food, great people but very unlucky with the wind.” Bruno Marques, International ISAF judge, adds: “Very friendly, fantastic organization, all you can ask for in an event. I hope it will become an annual regatta forever.”

Slalom Nationals 2012

[May update] Adelaide Slalom event cancelled

[Original post] The 2012 Slalom Nationals are proposed to be held in Adelaide from Jan 26-29. Watch for further details.

[April update] The Formula Windsurfing Nationals are also fighting for this time slot. Which event would you be more likely to attend? Why?

We have made the reluctant decision to not host this event for the following reasons:

lack of interest in SA – we have asked around and there are very few local sailors showing any interest in this event – disappointing.
reliance on other states to boost the numbers
clash of dates with other major events in other states
clash of dates with other major event in SA (west cost wave event)
lack of time for the two main organisers – both self employed and extremely busy in their respective businesses.
event cost and financial commitment, and risk of small entrant numbers.

We understand that any event must be weighed up interms of risk. We are realistic about this. But when we look at the very low local interest in this event, and the heavy reliance we will have on other states, combined with the cost etc – it doesn’t add up for us.

Slalom and Marathon Series 09/10

The Dates are:

06 September 2009 (rescheduled to 13th)

Events may be postponed to the next windy Sunday, so watch the Seabreeze Forum for updates

The Series will consist of Slalom + Marathon racing predominantly at the Murray Mouth, but will consider other locations depending on the forecast conditions.

The final race day in February will be a marathon race / social run along the entire length of the Adelaide metropolitan coast line from Seacliff to Semaphore.

Entrants must be current members of Windsurfing SA or interstate equivalents if you are travelling from interstate to compete. Refer the Windsurfing SA website for membership details and procedures www.windsurfing.org/sa.htm

The emphasis for this race series is on FUN. First time racers are very welcome and encouraged.

SA GPS Windsurfing - Summer 2009 - results

Final Results for the SA GPS Summer of Speed proudly sponsored by Starboard.

Well done to SAM DOECKE for winning this event. No surprises that he sailed consistently well throughout the summer to take out the event title.

The competition ran from 1 Dec 2008 to 28 Feb 2009. There were 132 sessions posted during that time, with 19 sailors contributing to the competition by submitting their gps tracks. Of these 19 sailors, 9 were current members of Windsurfing SA, so they are eligible to be recorded in the final results.

Locations sailed during this compeition were: Goolwa, Milang, Lake Bonney, Boggy Lake, Murray Mouth, Lake George, Kingston Park, Chicken Shop, Semaphore, Seacliff Park, Christies Beach and Sellicks Beach.

Sessions posted were David Mossop 16, Meta Sindos 14, Sam Doecke 13, Hamish Bubner 10, Anthony Hamood 8, Simon Lahiff 7, Richard Upton 6, Chris Dimond 6, Tim Hemer 5.

Please be aware that the Nov 2008 Slalom National Championship have been relocated to Ramsgate Beach, Sydney, 8-9 Nov 2008.

Unfortunately the Sandy Point venue became untenable for a number of reasons, and whilst we had fought to keep that event/venue happening, the general consensus was to relocate.

Results KASail WinterSeries’08 #2

The second round of the KASailWINTERSERIES’08 was held yesterday (12/07/2008) at Boggy Lake. The forecast was for N/NW winds at 20-30 knots, and the plan was to run slalom racing. These plans soon changed when we tried to place the first buoy, and the wind was so strong that it took off across the water with the anchor dragging across the surface sending spray high into the air. A quick chase in the boat and Sam was able to grab it on the run. We then realised that perhaps our shiny new massive inflatable buoys were going to be too big for the day (and perhaps our boat was too small), so we would focus on some speed instead. We weren’t at the best venue for speed sailing conditions, and the strong cross wind with 1 foot chop was quite unsettling on the boards. It was also difficult to find a board/sail/fin combo that worked and the gusts were very strong but there were still lulls that would have you sinking if you were on small gear.

There was only a modest turnout, but in the end, the results were:

29.8 knots Richard Upton (27.9 on the Kona)
29.3 knots Norm Clarke
26.8 knots Nick Bellgrove

Crazy day, and super cold once again, but then that’s what this winter racing is all about.

The next round is on the weekend of 16/17 August, and will either be slalom or speed again depending on conditions.

Slalom Nationals

There is a proposal to run a GPS speed event at Sandy Point, Victoria and combine the Slalom Nationals. GPS Speed event Sep27 – 12 Oct.
Slalom Nationals run some time between the dates 7-12 Oct.

Seems like a bunch of guys from NSW and QLD are keen to try and make this happen and I thought that the SA and VIC guys might get behind it also?

Apparently accommodation is not a problem, but all the other logistic need to be thought out. KISS would be the key…

Anyway, I suggest we try and make it happen as I don’t know anyone keen to run a Slalom Nationals at the moment. Maybe we could also make the GPS Speed result recognized by the AWA also?

We have excellent venues for GPS speed events, with sailors recording speeds up to 42 knots. The possible purchase of buoys (mentioned earlier) is for the slalom and marathon racing, not just GPS speed, especially as GPS speed doesn’t actually need buoys.

Speed equipment: Any GPS can be used but it must be capable of showing speed in knots. The highest screen readout wins the day. No downloads required.

The Navi GT-11 is the best GPS unit to use at the moment as it has Doppler capabilities (around $150). Our events to date have been serious and competitive on the water, but decided on screen readout to allow for a variety of units to be used. This does not exclude anyone and maximizes entrant numbers. There’s stacks of forums that cover GPS use – seabreeze.com for example.
